Heading North on 101 there is a sign that says
"Welcome to Area 101" It has a large UFO painted on the sign.
Anyone know why??

Some interesting folks live there... They have had a couple of "Raves" there but I've never gotten a chance to go to one..

    Happy tripper paintings for sure...

I would guess it has to do with the large collection of general wierdos that hide out among the redwoods. Enough strangeness for outside observers to belive they might be refugees from another planet...

..of course that's only my theory having lived with some of them. If they themselves didn't put it up, there may be an entirely different reason... :-)

Its because a lot of weird things occur in that area. Not neccessariliy aliens, but why do you think the Yuroks have the legends about the little people? My father has seen these small bigfoot-esque things on the side of the road there, and just recently my best friend and his mom were driving down south and on the way there a smallish man with a huge beard jumps out of the woods towards their car. I believe it.

the place is now a Spiritual Retreat Center that also sponsors shows and even built both indoor/outdoor stages as I hear from others, I've yet to make it out to anything there myself as well.

I understand the Emerald Cup is a favorite amonst locals though for sure.

      Cheers.

Its kind of like a spiritual community place for Laytonville and the surounding area. I lived in L-ville for 3 yrs. They also have some shows/music every now and again. My favoroite moment there was seeing John Trudell and Quiltman with elder from Round Valley reservation Coyote...

A bunch of my friends in L-ville used to have a sunday gathering/ jam there. Not sure if it still goes on these days...
