There is a ton of stuff to do in HC. You just have to know where to look.

Try going to the Logger Bar in Blue Lake after a Dell 'Arte show. That's always a hoot. Hicks mixed with the finest eurotrash this side of the atlantic. It's quite the scene.

Dating in HC is pathetic though. That is one of the reasons I left.

I didn't smoke, do drugs, drink, cuss, or have physical contact with anybody in humboldt county... then there was the breakdown, the stockpiling of weapons, and that whole purity of essence thing (POE). Anyways, after two years, it was time for me to leave, which was ok, because a number of the long term residents just plain freaked me out. Arcata also had a habit of eating people who were new to the area and turning them into an ever growning dark minion of the undead.

I couldn't live on Mad River Beach and in Redwood Park behind HSU, and work at the bulb farm in Arcata all my life! Off I went to Japan to teach Engrish!

The Buld farm! I wored there too! I hated it - the freezers, well, froze.

My wife and kids and I left after 10 poverty-stricken years in Arcata. No jobs for teachers. We had to feed our kids. We try to go back every October.

      I miss HumCo dearly.

humboldt needed a better night life...

i left humboldt reluctantly...i just couldn't have a degree and work at the jewelry counter of gottschalks...part-time.

also, there's a lack of diversity in humboldt, and i was starved for it when i moved back to l.a.

    i miss it though...

i know what u mean..... when i go up to humboldt to visit my folks, it's great.....it's so lush.......so green.....so laid back....but that feeling only lasts about a week or so....after awhile, i start feeling that itch again.......when i'm older i'd love to live up there again (maybe)....but for now, i'm enjoying it down here in L.A....

re: working at gottschalks.....i knew someone who used to work in that department....her name is melissa scolari.....did u, by chance know her? (i mean chances are pretty great, don't u think?)

I'll never speak a bad word about the amazing friends I'll always have in Humboldt. That said there truly isn't enough diversity. There's not enough good live music and there's just not enough options. I moved to Humboldt because of an amazing vacation I spent there in high school and I too feel like visiting is the way to go until I'm ready to settle down. San Francisco is where I need to be at this point. There's just not enough DJ gigs available up there and the ones that are available don't really pay much. It's not all about money but a thriving dance scene is a beautiful thing. The dancers pay, the djs play and you can afford to bring in some really good talent every week or month. That's just how it should work.

        School system was weak too.

I left to get away from my mother mostly. We moved up there in '75 to gwet out of LA and the smog. I left in '83 to go back to he big city because I was a bored teenager. I sometimes have hopes of retiring there after she is dead (she's psychotic) but it's too fucking far away from civilization, so I'll probably stay here in Sonoma county instead.

I mistly just miss the forest...

I used to go to daycare as a wee-lad in the park behind humbolt state. So beautiful... Every time I go back now I still know 5 square miles of that forest like the back of my hand. The people are allright, hick and hippie mix. The pot is fantastic, blueberry is always my favorite. The fog I don't miss so much, I've gotten all spoiled down here in LA.

I couldn't be a Marching Lumberjack all my life. Granted, playing Toby and Jacks and Sidelines after the Crabs games for free beer will always hold a special place in my heart, there's just not enough real work up there to keep me interested.

    Besides, they killed Arcata Bowl.

I needed to be in a city, where things were happening, where not everybody knew my name. I lived in Arcata for 6 years. I met some really incredible people in Humboldt County, and made some lasting bonds, but the lack of diversity was a little strangling at times. It was hard being a queer, Jewish freak on 10th Street.
I miss it a lot, the slow way of life where you can just eek by, say hello to your neighbors, etc. What I miss the most would definitely have to be the Arcata Community Forest and Moonstone Beach. It's the most gorgeous beach in the world. It calls me sometimes. . . at night. But San Francisco rocks, all the same.

I lived in Arcata for a year, then 4 years in SF then back to Arcata for 2 1/2 years. Now i'm in San Diego.
My first stay in HC i was going to CR. Moved to SF for school. Then back again to HC to go to HSU.
Left school and Arcata to get married and be in a city.
Going from Arcata to So-cal was major culture shock.

I miss the forest and things like the co-op and Wild Berries.
I also have a lot of friends still up there going to school and such. Miss them tons.

I miss my house on Union Street and familiar faces everywhere. Slower pace of living.

But it is too small of a town for what I see myself doing.

A great place to visit and take a breather. Maybe a nice place to retire and raise sheep and spin wool, or keep bees and grow old. But for now, city living is where I want to be.
Though San Fran will always be my fave!

I had plenty to do up there--I've always been pretty good at finding things to do. But I knew that a job was not something I could find up there, so I ran home to Sacramento.

I visit there every couple of years, and am always kind of happy to see how little has changed--although I was horrified when I saw the burned rubble that had formerly been Marino's. Compared to that, seeing Larry's Market (where I used to buy mac & cheese, cheap beer and ramen) changed into "Wild Berries Market" was only a mild shock.

At least Hey Juan! was still open the last time I was up there... and Don's Donut Bar, and Tin Can Mailman, and People's Records, and Cafe Mokka. Those five places are where I spent most of my time up there...

Wow! We moved up there in '75, I was not even ten yet turned ten later that year) nad the Tincan mailman was my mom's favorite place to hang out! I can still sing a tune about Don's donut shop! And I think Hey Juan's wasn't even around yet, but I remember it from later on after I left and would go back to revisit. And People's records...that's where I hunted down a copy of Johnny Are you Queer Boy, by Josie Cotton, how can I ever forget. Thanks for the walk down memory lane guys, that's apart of my life I rarely get to think about any more.

was anyone actually born there... a lot of us seem to have the same story... i was dragged from l.a. around '81 with a crazy mom that wanted to get away from the growing population and smog... i moved back to l.a. full time when i was 19 to get away from my mom... she now lives in the forests of willits... and i have a wonderful life without her... <wait for applause to die down>... yet, i can't get hc out of my system... i long to sit under a redwood... spark one up... and read a book... fuck it folks... let's put together a carpool...

Oh Snottbottle!!! I think I have a crush on you now *just kidding* you have a picture of the Trinidad Lighthouse in your photos and I'm sooo jealous! I actually lived in the house across the street form it for about six weeks when we first moved to humboldt in '75. It was gettign rented out to friends of ours, the owners lived in Hawaii. I know secrets about that house! And I'm not tellin' *sits in a chair and zips her lips* you can't make me ;-). But I would so love to carpool up there, if it becomes convenient?

                  Heh, me too.

On another subject; does anyone remember the Godl Rush Icecream parlor, is it still there? I remember a woman who bought it and started a company called chocoholics. She used to make a Kalua cream pie that I would kill for! If anyone gets up that way and can bring me one, I'd mkae it worth your while }:->.

I'm with most of the rest of you -- parents moved up from San Diego ~1980, but looking back, HC is definitely where I "grew up." We lived out in the woods near Redway/Garberville, and later in Phillipsville. I can't imagine a better place to grow up, even though there was certainly a dark side.... but now, while I've gotten accustomed to city life, I still have a basic appreciation for the little luxuries, like having a flushing toilet, no helicopters cruising overhead, being on the electrical grid, etc. I know what it's like to live slow and close to the land. I wouldn't trade that for anything.

I left when I was 18 because my three closest friends had all moved with their families to other areas. I moved to Berkeley to be near one of them, because when I visited her, I fell in love with her group of friends. There are a lot of great people in Humboldt, but it's hard to get involved in a community when everyone is spread out, you're a confused and shy teenager, and everyone else seems exclusively interested in getting high. In Berkeley, the people I met were interested in *everything.* Portland, Oregon is pretty good that way too. But I'm still not too far from Humboldt -- just circling it, in the Pacific Northwest :-) Because there is still that draw. It's still only places with tall evergreens and wet winters that feel like home.

Actually, yes, some of us were born there -- the old General Hospital in Eureka, which is now Sempervirons (the mental health facility). Lived in Trinity for 15 years, visiting Humboldt because Trinity is rivers and lakes and horses and ranches and to do the grocery shopping we had to drive down to HC. Lived in Humboldt proper form another 8 yrs or so, during the formative time. Miss it, but mostly miss the idea of lost youth.

I lived in Eureka for two years. I was a news reporter for KINS NewsTalk radio. The pay was low and the work was steady. My boss was a republican conservative and not a joy to work for. With the exception of the standard professions, such as lawyer, doctor, city and/or country employee, etc...it was very difficult to earn a living in Humboldt County. Most "jobs" were minimum wage and you made little income. I tried for a brief time to find something else but it didn't happen. Although I probably didn't try hard enough as its possible something might have given way...I know that my then friend, Rodney, who helped lead the Food Not Bombs organization, went to work for a bank and eventually that grew into a much more substantial job for him and he makes a good living for himself. He also headed the Arcata food cooperative..don't know if he's still doing that...

But in the end, while I was in Eureka, I found Humboldt to be a very depressed economy..Fishing and logging declined and there was a terrible speed/meth problem throughout the county that harmed many of the kids who grew up there....the girls in Aracata, in particular, HSU, I found to be very pretty and it made me wish I'd been a student at HSU for that alone (shameful confession)....nevertheless, I got tired of being "poor" and left...now I'm poor anyway and I'm right back where I started..(but at least I own property..;-))

I have not been back to Humboldt since the end of 1996..I met some great folks up in Humboldt and I hope one day to return and revisit some of those people.....I do not want to meet the red neck bastards that also populate Humboldt....
